Nerja, once known as Narixa (abundant spring), has a long history, evidenced by the primitive paintings found in its famous Nerja caves.
The former fishing village is today mainly known as a lovely example of a charming white Andalusian village, with the famous Balcón de Europa in it's very center. Nerja is surrounded by beautiful nature and is only one hour's drive from Granada and the ski resort Sierra Nevada.
In the many alleys of Nerja you'll find many high quality restaurants and cute shops, and Nerja gives you several beautiful beaches to chose from.
The name Torrox probably derives from the Arabic word for tower, as Spain was ruled by Muslims from mid 700 and eight centuries onwards. However, Torrox dates back further than that. Down by the Torrox lighthouse you can find excavations from the Roman era.
The historic part of Torrox, known as Torrox Pueblo, is a beautiful white village located on the left hand side of the highway when coming from Málaga. The more modern, costal part of Torrox, is called Torrox Costa. This area is nice and relaxing, with lovely sandy beaches and a long beach walk filled with so called "chiringuitos" (beach restaurants).
Torre del Mar is a fairly small but vibrant town located between Málaga and Nerja. It still retains its small town charm, but there is always something going on in Torre del Mar. Before tourism really started to take off, Torre del Mar was primarily known for its sugar cane crops and sugar production.
Torre del Mar nowadays is mainly known for it's long, flat, easy accesible beach walk. Lot's of activities and events take place here. People all ages are strolling about, taking outdoor gym classes, playing, relaxing and socialising from early morning til late night. There's never a dull moment in Torre del Mar.
